How can I help?

As counsellor, I work from a foundation of person centred therapy. Within this I apply acceptance and commitment therapy and compassion focussed therapy. Together these therapies help to support your specific wellness goals. You may just want someone to listen or we can use active techniques to gently challenge your thinking. The focus is on you, with your lead, we can come up with a personalised plan designed just for you.

A Personal Approach

Working within the NHS during the COVID-19 pandemic has given me a lot of experience with stress in the workplace. Stress is directly linked to our mental health and as an employer there is a lot of pressure placed on you to ensure your employees wellbeing is taken into consideration. I can offer short or long workshops that deal with stress, self esteem and motivation to name but a few. During my time in the NHS I have also been trained as a workplace mediator and CISM (critical incident stress management) practitioner. Please feel free to contact me for details of these or  if you need a bespoke package tailoring to your needs. I can create a program that works for you.

Personal Wellness

For a Better Tomorrow

Not everyone has the same needs. My counselling practise looks at you as an individual and lets you take the lead. I am warm and understanding and I am happy to take a non judgemental journey with you. I want to help restore you to find new meaning in your life and provide relief from despair or anguish. If you are experiencing relationship issues, grief, loss, life changing events or trauma, I can help.

Let's get normal about anxiety

I've worked in both an NHS setting and also in a mental health charity and if there is one thing I have learned about anxiety it's that it is a normal response to abnormal life events or stresses. But, you don't have to feel this way.

The essence of my work is to facilitate self-growth by helping you identify your core mind, body and spirit challenges, so that you can overcome them with confidence.

Frequently Asked Questions

For Your Information

How soon can I start working with you?

I can offer face to face sessions, online or telephone appointments to suit you. Appointments can be booked any time between 8am to 8pm. Before we start working together I offer an initial free consultation where we can get to know each other and answer any questions that you may have. We can then book an appointment.  Following that conversation I will send you a counselling agreement or contract that states what I will guarantee for you and what I expect from you. This lays out terms of my service in an easy to understand way.

Is counselling confidential?

Please rest assured, what is said in our session will remain in our session. Your privacy and safety is of the highest priority to me and I would only break confidentiality in the  most extreme of conditions. These would include if you were in imminent danger of harm, about to harm someone else or certain criminal activities that require mandatory reporting.

Do you offer a face to face consultation?

Due to the recent COVID-19 restrictions it has not been possible to provide a face to face service. However, as restrictions lift this is now becoming possible. I am now able to offer face to face sessions at 'The Therapy Quarters', The Barracks, Barracks Road, Newcastle under Lyme, ST5 1LG. I can offer appointments from 8am to 8pm Monday to Friday.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does counselling work?

I'm not saying that I am going to fix you. Firstly, the chances are, you are not broken and they way that you are feeling now is a perfectly normal response to stressful situations or traumatic events in your life. I can hold a safe space for you to explore these issues and try make sense of what has happened to you. Secondly, I don't provide a fix, instead I enable you to explore your issue and facilitate you to discover your own solutions. The one thing I can say with full confidence is that you can start to feel differently within just a few sessions.

Do you offer group consultations or workshops?

Counselling sessions are with a single person only. It is important that you are alone when you are with your counsellor as you need to be able to speak freely and without censorship. However, I plan to run group sessions starting soon. Group sessions will be focused on single issues such as anxiety/depression/self confidence etc. For details of these look at the events page. Workshops are starting from January 2022, these will be over weekends and held in hotels throughout the UK. These will include improving relationships, building self confidence and overcoming anxiety. For more details see the events section.

What is 'integrative counselling'?

Traditionally, counselling has been based on the work of Carl Rogers and this is known as Person Centred Counselling. I have a firm grounding in this tradition. It means that I support my clients with empathy, congruence (honesty and authenticity) and unconditional positive regard. However, in addition to this I apply evidence based therapy techniques. I use elements of acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), emotion focused therapy (EFT) and compassion focused therapy (CFT). This makes for a more rounded therapy with a balance of listening and doing in the therapy space.

Who comes to counselling?

Anyone and everyone, any gender, age, ethnicity or sexual orientation. I am of the opinion that everyone would benefit from counselling as it allows you to reflect on you and it can be an incredibly life affirming and powerful experience. However, it can also be a painful process and it takes courage to take the first step. You are here reading this now, have hope and faith and pick up the phone.
